CSUN’s University Student Union (USU) hosted a Noontime Concert Thursday in the Plaza del Sol. The concert featured the musical styling of CSUN alum DJ Rich along with free ice cream and a free craft corner.
“Free ice cream is genius because its really hot and I like ice cream,” said Paulina Ozuna, freshman political science major.
The USU offered vanilla, strawberry, and Neapolitan ice cream. Students were also able to top their bowls of ice cream with gummy bears, Oreos, peanut butter M&Ms and chocolate syrup.
Many students braved the triple digit heat to wait in line for a free refreshing snack.
Ozuna said she enjoyed the concert and what it had to offer.
“The whole concert is a really good idea,” she said.
Ozuna said students could request any music that they wanted but she hoped they had played more Latin music and maybe some rock.
Chakkirala Karthik, electrical engineering major said he did not know about the concert until he was walking through the plaza and stopped because he thought it looked interesting.
“They have very different flavors of ice cream and good music,” Karthik said.
DJ Rich played some of the biggest hits of today’s Top 40 for the full hour and gave entertainment to students trying to pass the long hours between classes. DJ Rich graduated in 2005 with a degree in psychology and a minor in business.
Along with free ice cream, there was another booth set up on the Plaza where students could create their own crafts.
Jessica Balfour, the arts and film chair of USU events and senior marketing major was running the craft corner.
“This week’s topic is “Back to School,” Balfour added. “We have facts on how to succeed at CSUN. We are giving maps. We’re making pencil cases and they get pencils and highlighters.”
Balfour said that Craft Corner has been going on for a couple semesters and that every week they host a craft with a different kind of craft and different topic.
Balfour said the concerts usually feature bands and musicians for entertainment.
CSUN student Kathleen Kessler was walking by the craft area and stopped to make her own pencil case purse.
“I saw it and wanted a free purse,” Kessler said.
Felipe Lepe, USU event coordinator was one of about seven workers in charge of the ice cream counter.
Lepe said that Noontime Concerts are Thursdays at noon and are one hour long.
“Students are loving this,” Lepe said. “They’re loving the ice cream.”
For students to be eligible to get a free ice cream, they had to fill out a quick survey, which Ozuna said was simple and easy because she did not have to give any personal information.
