The Matadors continue to rack up loss after loss, but at least they got the winless monkey off their back during their time at the NFCA Cathedral Classic over the weekend.
CSUN (1-14) entered the competition with an 0-10 record and lost the first two games of the Classic Thursday before finally earning its first victory of 2012, a 1-0 extra-innings decision over Iowa on Saturday. The Matadors lost two more games the following day.
Leann Lopez scored the Matadors’ winning unearned run in the top of the eighth inning following a Madeline Sale sac fly. Mia Pagano, who threw a complete game and only allowed five hits, preserved the win in the bottom inning.
The Matadors got their 11th and 12th consecutive losses to start the season Thursday against Boise State and No. 8 Texas, respectively. Against Boise State, CSUN took a 3-3 tie into the seventh inning, but a two-run Bronco homer handed it a 5-3 loss. The Matadors later lost to the Longhorns 4-0.
CSUN faced undefeated No. 1 Cal Sunday and was overpowered in a 7-0 loss. In the second part of the day’s double-header, the Matadors lost to San Diego State 7-1.
The Matadors continue their season with another five-game slot at the San Diego Classic I this weekend.
