Students belted out songs the best they could for the USU Games Room Karaoke Competition Thursday night, battling it out for three secret prizes.
The event is put together by the Commercial Services Department and the USU to bring students together, showcase their talent and socialize said Ashley Du, commercial services attendant.
This semester’s karaoke night pulled in a smaller crowd than other occasions, with only about 18 people in attendance.
“I was expecting a bigger crowd but it’s always nice to have a closer atmosphere and a great vibe,” said Du.
There were 12 performances with students signing rock, hip-hop and pop songs, either on their own or in duets.
Brian Tran, senior screenwriting major, got the audience’s energy up and cheering on his performance of “Jailhouse Rock.”
Tran said he was looking for something to do Thursday night, when he stumbled upon a flyer for the karaoke competition that also mentioned free food so he decided to check it out.
“It’s cool. This is exactly how I expected it,” said Tran. “I expected an OK amount of people.”
Like Tran, Alexis Roberts, junior biology major, was looking for something to do Thursday night when she saw something about the karaoke competition while at work at the SRC.
Roberts was one of a few students that took the stage twice. For her first performance she sang Frank Oceans’ “Thinking About You” and for her second performance she sang a duet to Destiny’s Child “Stand up for Love.”
“I had a good time and I’m having a lot of fun,” said Roberts. “It’s fun to see everyone put their own flair on songs.”
Roberts said that she did not mind that a lot of students did not turn out for karaoke night.
“It’s a close knit group of people so you’re not embarrassed to sing in front of them,” she said.
Winners were selected by the amount of cheering they received from the audience.
Hansook Oh, took first place with her performance of Maroon 5’s “She will be loved.” Second place went to Tran and third place to Roberts.
All winners will be notified what they won by email, said Du.
