CSUN’s faculty and staff have been receiving fraudulent emails from an unidentified source that aims to steal people’s personal information.
Faculty and staff have responded to the fraudulent emails and had their email account passwords stolen, which were used to generate more fraudulent emails. Other fraudulent email recipients’ computers were infected with identity-stealing viruses.
CSUN’s information technology department sent out an alert to all faculty and staff warning them that CSUN will not request personal information, including passwords or social security numbers.
Faculty and staff were also warned not to click on suspicious URL’s and to look for spelling or grammatical errors, which can be a sign of the fraudulent emails.
It has not been identified how many people have been affected by them emails or who is responsible for them.
