The F Word club had their first event this semester called “Who Needs Feminism” in front of Sierra Tower Thursday.
Skylar Grogan, 21, junior gender women studies major and public relations officer for the club, said the club became The F Word this semester, but was previously called Gender Women Studies Student Association.
“The club is an open conversation of why feminism isn’t as scary as people think it is and why women have a basic privilege,” Grogan said.
She also said the club dismantles centers of oppression and in order to be free in one arena have to be free in others.
Students wrote ideas and quotes down on a white board for others to see.
Arturo Hernandez, 21, junior psychology major, wrote on the white board “I need feminism because equality is necessary.”
Hernandez said it is important to have events like this on campus because if not then feminism would be an issue that is not confronted.
“The fact that women take the time out to have this is creating awareness,” Hernandez said.
Grogan said feminism is not a scary thing and benefits everyone.
“It is necessary in a functional and enlightened society,” she said.
