Director of women’s shelter in Mexico to speak at CSUN

Psychologist Irma Casas Franco, director of Casa Amiga, a women’s shelter in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico will talk about her work in the shelter on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Sierra Hall’s Whitsett Room.

Casa Amiga works with abused women and children and has provided psychological and legal help since 1999. The first women’s shelter opened in 2003 and was founded by Esther Chávez Chacón. All the services they offer are free of charge.

The prevention program of Casa Amiga include visiting churches, maquiladoras (factories), schools and community centers to educate kids and adults about their work.

The shelter workers fight gender violence in their community, want to build a violence free environment and promote gender equality. At the event, Casas Franco will share the effort that her, Chávez Chacón and a group of women who have helped other women have experienced.
