The No. 10 CSUN Women’s Water Polo team capped off their season with a 10-9 come back victory over No. 8 UC Davis to place third in the Big West Conference Championship Tournament in Honolulu.
The Matadors were down three-goals in the first quarter, but five goals in the second, four goals in the third and a solo goal in the last quarter catapulted CSUN to victory behind hat tricks from seniors Kelcy Barott and Marisa Young.
Senior Kelcie Ferreira started off the scoring barrage in the first and third minute of the second quarter after the Matadors fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter. Senior Katie Kammer, freshman Madeleine Sanchez, and Barott all added on to Ferreira’s tally in the second period, before the Matadors notched in four more in the third. CSUN headed in to the fourth quarter with a resounding 9-5 lead.
UC Davis wouldn’t hold back, scoring two quick goals to pull the Aggies back within two goals. Young capped off the scoring and notched in CSUN’s 10th goal of the afternoon before a late rally from UC Davis cut the game to 10-9. CSUN would close out the rest of the game, and claim the victory, finishing in the top three in the tournament once again.
