Unique sound comes to the Mint

With soulful music and meaningful lyrics, Jonah Smith has a lot to offer to music. By bringing together a strong guitar and expressive voice, his music is definitely not a miss.

Jonah Smith will be performing at the Mint in Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 23. His show will bring together many different types of music and attendees are going to be exposed to a lot of different styles.

“I’m a kind of folk rock songwriter, soul singer,” he said. “I play with a really talented live blues and jazz guitar player, hip hop drummer and funk bassist. It’s a combination of all things that stemmed out of African American music.”

Music has always come naturally to Smith. He describes it as his passion and artistic expression. He said his inspiration is internal.

“You generate your own ideas and concepts,” he said. “Then a good part of it comes from the music and the art I experience and how it sort of rubs off on me subconsciously.”

Smith said his unique music is something that others tend to enjoy. His combination of many different styles is something that he feels is hard to compare and hard to describe to others.

“It’s just sort of when you pull from your own internal clock,” he said. “And you’re marching to the beat of your own drummer. You can hope it comes out sounding original. I’m happy doing what I’m doing.”

Performing at the Mint, Smith hopes that people will be excited to come to the show.

“I’m driving all the way across the country, driving 10,000 miles on this tour. Since I’m making that sort of an effort, how dare you be lazy and sit on your couch and not come,” he said jokingly.
