KCSN needs programming changes

Many students here are probably unaware of the fact that we have a campus radio station… sort of. This isn’t a column that will tell you to listen to that station, either. It’s quite the opposite. KCSN is based on campus, receives its Federal Communications Commission license through CSUN offices, but on the whole, is nothing like a college radio station should be. It certainly doesn’t have any music or programming that the average student at Cal State Northridge would… Read more

The Bank of Europe vs. the Church of America

Why can’t the United States have a Church of America? We have a Bank of America. You don’t have to bank at Bank of America just because it’s called Bank of America, and in Church of America, you don’t have to subscribe to any particular dogma except lip service to God and Jesus. The stance is basically a sanctimonious attitude and a feeling like a divine right to open a can of whup-ass on the world. Then guys in Georgia… Read more

No moral escape from vegetarianism

When I tell people I am a vegetarian, I get a myriad of responses. Most people are curious about why I decided to give up meat, some want to know how I get my protein, and some want to know how that weird Morning Star/ Boca food tastes. When I tell people they also shouldn’t eat meat, they get downright offended. The response I get then is usually, “Who cares; they’re just animals. They wouldn’t even be alive if it… Read more

New ‘tax by the mile’ plan way off the mark

People say that those of us who live in southern California are some of the luckiest people in the world. The sun shines over 300 days of the year. We have Hollywood, miles and miles of beaches and Disneyland. But what most people who don’t live in the L.A. area fail to realize is the high cost of living. Houses, food, rent; everything here is overpriced, including gasoline. Just last week, I paid $2.19 a gallon for medium grade, and… Read more

Women’s studies, feminism full of misconceptions

Let’s play a quick game of word association. What is the first thought that comes to mind when you hear the term “women’s studies”? How about feminism? It has been my experience that when I speak of such topics, shock and irritation fills the air, and an off-color joke told by either sex about women ends the conversation. These two concepts, for many individuals, are hazy areas of tense confusion that have become branded with negative stereotypes revealing the true… Read more

Local TV news full of misguided speculation

I try to refrain as much as possible from watching the local news for two basic reasons: there is too much speculation and there is too much negativity. My family was glued to the TV Jan. 28 when an abandoned suicide attempt on commuter train tracks in Glendale killed 11 people. This was because one of our family members was on the train. Naturally, we switched back and forth between local news coverage to see if any of them had… Read more

Crisis looms over U.S. science research

The security, health and welfare of the United States are threatened by a crisis the likes of which we have not seen since Sputnik. When the United States realized that the Russians were ahead of us in the space race, our nation quickly put into effect a multi-billion dollar crash program to improve science and math education in schools, and science and math funding in general. The crisis now is far worse than it was during Sputnik. Now, we are… Read more

America’s brand new enemy: Merry ole’ England

I never thought I would say this, but I think it’s time for the United States to go on the offensive. The Cold War is back on, but there’s a new enemy. Last week, President Bush traveled to Europe to try mending fences with former allies who disagreed with the United States during the much-maligned war in Iraq. Bush sat down with leaders from Russia, Belgium, Germany, and even France. There was dialogue about the future of the European Union,… Read more

Reality TV transcends fad status

W hat is this obsession we have with reality TV? Why must we watch poor helpless fools eat cockroaches or be ridiculed on national television, all for the sake of cash and/or their 15 minutes of fame? It’s certainly “television,” but is this reality? Is it even entertainment? Apparently, and perhaps unfortunately, it’s both. RTV has overstayed its welcome, and has become both redundant and annoying. RTV’s sole purpose has developed into the humiliation and degradation of people for the… Read more
