The six-game-winning streak and undefeated status the CSUN Matadors held coming into the 2014-2015 season was broken Thursday night 73-63 by the Saint Mary’s College Gaels.
The private Bay Area school secured a close victory over CSUN after battling for the lead throughout most of the game play and coming out on top in the second half.
CSUN chased Saint Mary’s College for the first few minutes and gained the lead at 12:35 in the first half.
From there, CSUN was able to develop a small lead that would last until the midpoint of the second half.
The Matadors chased the the Gaels for the remainder of the of the game, but they were unable to catch up to the West Coast Conference team.
CSUN’s primary shooters pulled double digits, with senior guard Ashlee Guay landing 16 points and securing the game high.Senior center Camille Mahlknecht secured 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Matadors.
This loss puts CSUN at 6-1 for the season. They remain tied in the Big West Conference with California State University, Long Beach who lost to the University of Southern California 90-85 Nov. 21.
CSUN will duel it out with Pepperdine University Dec. 6. Pepperdine holds a 3-4 average for the early 2014-2015 season.
