Five people were injured in a stabbing incident around 8 a.m. today at UC Merced. According to the UC Merced Police Department, the suspect was shot by police and died from his injuries.
Two of the victims were airlifted to a local hospital while the other three were treated on campus, according to a UC Merced press release. Though the severity of their injuries is not mentioned, officials said that all victims were conscious. According to a KCRA report on the stabbing, campus officials said three or four of the victims were students as was the suspect.
The press release states that the incident occurred in front of the Classroom and Office building on the campus. It also said the campus has been closed for the day and all classes are canceled.
According to UC Merced’s Twitter feed, the campus had been shut down, but starting a little past 10 a.m., students, faculty and staff were allowed to leave campus. Campus officials said to avoid Scholars Lane and to avoid coming to campus for the rest of the day.
