Season ends, bright future looms

The Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team has a bright future, despite having its season ended by UC Santa Barbara last week 2-1 in the conference semi-finals. It was the first time in the school’s history that they were able to host a conference tournament game, and only the third time the Matadors reached the tournament altogether. The second annual Big West Conference Tournament gets underway Wednesday, featuring the top four men’s soccer teams. As the fourth-place team, Cal State Northridge (10-7-2, 5-4-1 BW) will face perennial powerhouse and regular season champ UC Santa Barbara, which ranked No. 3 in the nation last week. CSUN tames Mustangs

The Mustangs couldn’t get anything going offensively for them in the paint, given the fact they only had two players over 6-foot-5 going up against a taller Matador team. The Mustangs then decided to utilize their speed to run around screens for open jump shots, mainly from three-point range. Matadors drops two on the road

It was an all too familiar weekend on the road for the Northridge women’s volleyball team as they went winless against UC Riverside Friday night and again Saturday night against UC Irvine. The Matadors dropped their seventh of the last nine five-set matches against the Highlanders after taking a two-set advantage. At last count going into Saturday night’s season finale, there were about seven different tie-breaker scenarios that would determine which school would clinch the fourth and final spot in the Big West Conference’s men’s soccer tournament. New Matadors make an impact

In the last two days college basketball powerhouses have struggled in exhibition matches against non-NCAA Division-I schools. No. 25 Syracuse lost to Division-II Le Moyne, and UCLA squeezed a one-point victory over Concordia, a school that is’nt even in the NCAA but the lesser-known NAIA. CSUN gets a rematch against UCSB in the Big West Tournament

The second-seeded Cal State Northridge (10-9, 6-2 Big West) hosts the opening round of the Big West Tournament against the archrival No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. today at Matador Field.
