Fashion, creativity and student talent will take the runway stage on Tuesday, May 5, as CSUN Trends presents its annual spring fashion show at CSUN. This year’s theme, “Masterpiece: The Art of Fashion,” highlights the connection between clothing design and artistic expression.
Leena Wang, co-president of CSUN Trends and director of this year’s fashion show, said the concept was created by students in the fashion show production class (FCS 377).
“We’re really focusing on the wearable art aspect of fashion,” Wang said. “The art and the masterpiece that is wardrobe and apparel creation.”
The show is a collaboration between student designers, the production class and CSUN Trends, a campus club open to students of all majors. While many of the designers come from the fashion design merchandising programs, Wang said the club welcomes anyone interested in fashion.
“You just have to like fashion,” Wang said. “A lot of the people on our board are not even fashion majors. We have public relations, marketing, business, journalism, all different types of people.”
This year’s runway will feature 11 to 12 student designers, each creating five to six original pieces. More than 20 additional students are helping behind the scenes through committees focused on media, public relations, stage production and model coordination.
Wang said one of the biggest challenges in preparing the show is time. Planning begins in January, leaving only a few months to organize an event for more than 400 guests while designers finish their collections.
“There’s never enough time,” Wang said. “But I think it’s good to have a little bit of a time crunch. It pushes and motivates you.”
The event will also reflect themes of diversity and sustainability. Wang said some collections are inspired by the designer’s cultural heritage, while many students use donated or repurposed fabrics, including materials from Reformation, a Los Angeles-based company known for its eco-friendly use of leftover materials.
The show begins at 6 p.m. at the USU Northridge Center. Tickets are $10 for CSUN students and $15 for non-students. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.
Wang encouraged all who can attend to support the emerging designers.
“You might see the next big designer’s collection before they break out,” she said.
Beyond the runway, the event highlights the growing fashion community behind CSUN Trends, with the organizers hoping to expand future shows and continue creating a space where student designers can showcase their work and connect with bigger audiences.
