The CSUN women’s tennis team struggled heavily during the three day winter invitational preseason tournament this weekend at Long Beach State.

The Matadors were unable to keep up with the talented opposing international roster led by junior French native Maeva Razakasoa. The 49ers collected a total of 24 match wins while CSUN was only able to walk away from the tournament with three.

Day one of the Beach Tennis Winter Classic featured three win-less single sets from the Matadors.

Red-shirt freshman Elisaveta Nosenko, senior Leslie Chang and red-shirt freshman Arpe Bagumyan all took a loss on Jan. 15, tallying up eight game wins collectively.

The Matadors managed to bounce back in doubles play.

CSUN finished day one with its only match win from senior Jessica Warren and red-shirt sophomore Scout Shutter, who defeated Long Beach’s Alex Jones and Lisa Nosenko, 6-4.

Long Beach State continued to dominate on day two as Saturday afternoon’s competition featured an impressive 8-0 day in singles over CSUN.

The No. 75 ranked Matadors suffered three consecutive straight-set losses at the 3-5 spots from the 49ers’ junior Julie Gerard, junior Hayley Thompson and junior Laura Eales. Only junior Mari Taslagyan, Warren and Shutter were able to force a third set during their respective matches for CSUN.

Matador doubles suffered a loss as well as Nosenko and Chang dropped their match to Long Beach’s Jones and Ella Monsey, 6-2. Over the first two days of the Winter Classic, the 49ers went undefeated in singles at 17-0 and picked up a total of four wins in doubles.

On day three, CSUN did not compete in singles but finished 2-4 in doubles play.

Juniors Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei handled Long Beach’s Razakasoa and Julie Gerard in a 6-4 match win. Warren and Shutter continued to shine as the duo finished off Jones and Monsey for the final match of the weekend.

Hsu and Poei were tandem stars in the first two fall classics held at CSUN and San Diego State University.

Doubles action continued to excel this past weekend as Warren and Shutter provided the only bright performance during CSUN’s final preseason tournament.

The Matadors enjoyed a successful fall last semester, yet, Long Beach’s Invitational slowed the Matador momentum.

CSUN looks to start fresh from a dismal weekend in Long Beach as they approach regular season competition.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association kick-off weekend starts Jan. 22 as CSUN travels to take on University of California 10 a.m.

After a two-game road trip, the Matadors will return home to face Loyola Marymount University on Jan. 30.

The following weekend, CSUN will get its shot at revenge as the team sizes up the defending 2015 Big West Champions, Long Beach State, on Feb. 5 for the first conference play of team season.
