The CSUN Instagram page announced that they’re the most economically diverse campus in the nation. However, that’s not entirely the case. On Tuesday afternoon, the csun_edu Instagram page said, according to the New York Times database, the school beat out 293 other public institutions.
While CSUN does not appear on the official ‘Greatest Economic Diversity’ list, it is number one on an interactive ‘Build Your Own College Rankings’ opinion article. That is, if economic diversity is your only priority and if you filter out private schools. The most economically diverse school in the nation would be Woodbury University in Burbank, which is a 30-minute drive.
Despite the miscommunication, the campus strives for economic diversity and offers several financial resources and financial aid to its students.
Associated Students Diversity and Inclusion chair Ali Walker says, along with FAFSA and scholarships, the campus offers the MataCare emergency grant, which gives up to $500 to those in need.
According to Walker, the money for the grant comes from part of students’ tuition, which will be used to help students in emergency situations such as a car accident or not being able to pay for rent. Documentation of the current crisis situation must be submitted along with the application, the deadline of which is Dec. 8.
When it comes to economic diversity, it is unclear how the CSU tuition increase will affect these statistics.
