Our First Amendment right will be in full display at the upcoming EOP Free Speech Event for CSUN students, faculty and staff, in the form of a platform to freely express thoughts, views and opinions in any way they wish and on any topic.
The free event will be held in Matador Square from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 28.
“The whole purpose of the event is to provide the campus community to come in and express their thoughts and opinions through any form of self expression like spoken word, speeches, song, performances and art,” said Leslie De Leon Tzic, EOP multimedia coordinator. “We do have scheduled participants that will be able to express their thoughts and opinions about different topics in different forms of self expression.”
Tzic expressed the goal of the event, saying: “We at EOP believe that this is an important right. As a matter of fact, 45 years ago if a group of students wouldn’t have raised their voices here on campus and demanded opportunities for students of color, we probably wouldn’t have a program like EOP today. That’s why we value the right of freedom of speech.”
Lucio Simental, academic advisor and marketing event committee for the EOP program, believes the event will offer a better understanding on people views and opinions.
Everyday people don’t have a lot of time to stop and meet different people on campus to see and hear different opinions, he said. Simental said hopefully they have a better view on what’s on other students minds.
Tzic said there will be around 18 to 20 participants, all from the CSUN community including faculty and staff.
For anyone interested in participating, Simental says there a few spots left, to contact him, or visit the EOP website for more details.
Participants are asked to review and agree to the “Free Speech Guidelines” available on the EOP website.
“This is a free event so anybody is welcome to come to support our speakers and performers and come and check out what this whole event is about,” said Tzic.
