Softball: Matadors have another 0-5 weekend in Las Vegas

Things couldn’t get worse for CSUN after it started its season by going 0-5 while being outscored 50-5 at the Kajikawa Classic a week ago. Unfortunately for them, things didn’t get better either. CSUN followed up a more-than-inauspicious season-opening weekend with an equally-poor trip to Las Vegas in which it faced five teams and lost to all of them. The Matadors (0-10) were outscored 54-12 this time around. The Matadors started the UNLV Louisville Classic Friday with their best performance… Read more

As the last seconds of Wednesday night’s vendetta game against Cal Poly wound down, three Mustangs stared at CSUN guard Josh Greene dribbling into the heart of their defense. The game was out of reach. Cal Poly had already waved the white flag, but Greene looked like he wanted to pour some more salt on the Mustangs’ wound. “They disrespected us (in San Luis Obispo), so I just wanted them to feel what we felt,” Greene said of the ending… Read more

Softball: Matadors look for first win as team travels to Las Vegas

There’s no way to sugarcoat it: the Matadors had a disastrous start to their 2012 season under second-year head coach Tairia Flowers. CSUN (0-5) dropped all five of its games at the Kajikawa Classic in Arizona last weekend. Three of its rivals were top-20 teams in the nation, but the Matadors were outscored 50-5 total. There were a few bright spots for the Matadors: senior infielder Alyssa Ray hit .571 for the weekend and had three doubles, including a two-hit… Read more

Valentine’s Feature: Married Matador coaches Jason and Tairia Flowers make home/work relationship work

A month into his head-coaching tenure with the CSUN women’s basketball program, Jason Flowers received some news that made him feel like he was in a movie. His wife, Tairia Flowers, had just been named the head coach of the CSUN softball team. “When it went down,” Jason said of the summer of 2010, when both he and Tairia became Matadors. “I used to tell people that Disney couldn’t have written a better script.” It certainly was a magical 2010… Read more

Men’s volleyball: No. 4 Cardinal outduel Matadors down the stretch

fasfsd

It’s not exactly a secret that the Matadors have been a completely different team this season when playing at home in contrast to when playing on the road. Heading into Saturday’s matchup against No. 4 Stanford, CSUN was 3-0 at the Matadome, 1-6 anywhere else. That standard of home vigor remained as true as ever against the Cardinal, specially during an inspiring second set. CSUN dominated Stanford then en route to an astounding 25-18 win. “Everything was working,” CSUN senior… Read more

Men’s basketball: CSUN looks to avoid letdown in Davis

To say the Aggies are struggling in 2011-12 would be a bit of an understatement. Boasting a 1-21 record that includes not a single win against a Division-I opponent, not many can be faulted for considering UC Davis the laughing stock of the Big West Conference. And that is the exact reason CSUN head coach Bobby Braswell is concerned heading into tonight’s rematch against these Aggies (8 p.m.). “They call these ‘trap games,’” Braswell said. “That’s a trap you can… Read more

Men’s basketball: Matadors’ defense not close to good enough against Gauchos in home loss

fdsafs

As the season has progressed, the Matadors’ defensive effort has improved in such manner that at times it has pleased the sometimes-seemingly-unpleasable Bobby Braswell. Even as the Matadors lost by 46 points at Cal Poly on Jan. 21, Braswell showed satisfaction over his team’s effort and scrappiness. Fast-forwarding to late Thursday night, however, it was safe to say a lot of the fulfillment the coach felt about his young team went out the window during an 85-70 loss against UC… Read more

Men’s basketball: Matadors fight valiantly before Fullerton’s clutch layup sinks them

fsfs

Going down the wire in a seesaw battle between teams in the opposite poles of the Big West Conference standings Thursday night, it was Cal State Fullerton’s turn at attempting to swing up on the scoreboard, and guard Kwame Vaughn delivered with a head-first driving layup to put his team up two. Given only 3.8 seconds to shoot back, the Matadors were in a dangerous territory. Even more so because they were out of timeouts. “We lost some timeouts I… Read more

Men’s volleyball: Matadors’ poor passing gives them no chance at No. 3 UCLA

asfsd

Westwood – Despite just having gotten swept emphatically by No. 3 UCLA, CSUN outside hitter Julius Hoefer showed a lot of conviction in expressing most of the credit for the Bruins’ victory Wednesday night belonged to the Matadors. “They (the Bruins) didn’t really beat us, we beat ourselves,” said Hoefer, who led the Matadors with nine kills during the 25-18, 25-15, 25-12 Mountain Paficic Sports Federation loss at the John Wooden Center. “We were passing badly, we didn’t kill anymore….
