Trans* Awareness Week celebrates CSUN’s transgender community

Trans* Awareness Week at CSUN continues through Nov. 20 featuring a variety of events, including film screenings and discussions.

The event is held to celebrate the transgender community on campus.

The week, organized by the Pride Center, kicked off Thursday with a comedy show performed by Ian Harvie at the Northridge Center.

“It’s a yearly event ending in Trans Day Remembrance where we get to raise awareness on campus, get other students involved and help our trans students and community,” said Maisha Manson, 23, a senior in the Deaf Studies program.

Trans* Awareness Week will continue tomorrow with Trans* 101, a talk concerning the social effects in the transgender community and the use of appropriate terminology.

The speaker is Cadence Valentine, a CSUN alumnus and transgender advocate.

There will be three sessions of Trans* 101 held throughout the week: 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday in the Grand Salon; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Thousand Oaks Room of the USU; and 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday in the Thousand Oaks Room of the USU.

“We want to help raise the visibility of transgender and gender nonconforming people, and address the issues these communities face,” said Sarina Loeb, Pride Center coordinator, in a statement.

The Dapper and Darling Fashion Show, hosted by the LGBTQA, will also take place on from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday in the Northridge Center.

A presentation of “Deaf Man’s Journey From Female to Male,” by Drago Renteria and Jennifer Mantle, will take place on Wednesday in the Thousand Oaks Room.

The week will conclude on Thursday with the Trans* Remembrance Ceremony, a tribute to honor transgender community members both living and deceased. It will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Thousand Oaks Room.

The CSUN Pride Center has planned Trans* Awareness Week in partnership with the LGBTQA, the Women’s Resource Center, the Queer Studies department, the Gender & Women’s Studies department, the Deaf Studies department, Northridge Young Democrats, and Gamma Rho Lambda.
