Agustin Fernandez was charged with murder on Oct. 20 last year in connection with the murder of Alkadi and his defense asked for a preliminary hearing set in April 2016 citing new and incoming evidence.
“I already received a packet of new evidence and there is still much discovery I am waiting on,” said public defender Justine Esack.
After more deliberation, the judge ruled that the date presented would be too far along and the new date for the preliminary hearing will be pulled back to March 19, 2015. This may change with further new evidence.
According to LAPD Chief Charlie Beck during a press conference in October, Fernandez allegedly stabbed Alkadi in an attempt to steal the car Alkadi was going to sell Fernandez and also keep the purchase price.
Alkadi went missing back in September after he posted an advertisement on Craigslist for his Audi A6 for $30,000.
During the investigation, detectives found the suspect in possession of the car and the money that was going to be used to buy the car according to Beck. Upon discovering Fernandez, police found evidence of Alkadi’s murder said Beck at the press conference.
The next day Alkadi’s body was discovered near the 10 Freeway in Palm Desert.
The media was not allowed to take video, still pictures or sketches of the defendant in the courtroom due to identity issues. The defense did not specify what those issues were.
