When William Tint came to CSUN as an international student, transferring from Myanmar in the fall of 2024, he found himself on an unfamiliar campus with no friends and no community. Then, he discovered a lifeline – the CSUN TRENDS fashion club.
“I’ve always been into fashion as a kid,” he said. “When I first got here, they were doing meet the clubs, and then I saw there was a fashion club. I was like, ‘Oh, why not join it?’”
CSUN TRENDS is a nonprofit student-run organization that was established by students and faculty in 1978. The club welcomes everyone with an interest in fashion and the fashion industry to join.
The club has now expanded to hosting meetings and having student ambassadors from other companies to speak to club members.
The two major events TRENDS is involved in are the fall Career Symposium and the Annual Spring Fashion Show. The Career Symposium consists of students connecting with industry professionals and getting information about different opportunities and pathways in the fashion world, while the Annual Fashion Show displays the work of senior design students and emerging designers.
At a collaboration event held in Eucalyptus Hall on Oct. 6 with skincare brand Good Molecules, TRENDS Vice President Connor Davidson welcomed a student ambassador from the company to come and network with the club members. Students, all in their best-dressed outfits, lined the hall as they waited with excitement to meet a fashion professional.
“Our last event, we did a fashion debate, like a fashion hot or not, and so it’s just a great place for students within the fashion program to come meet each other and network,” Davidson said.
TRENDS Co-President Lena Wang expressed how, as a public relations major, she has learned a lot from the club and believes it can do the same for other students.
“I’ve had our officers and members say that they got the job opportunity, specifically, our Good Molecules event today. She got the job opportunity for being a student ambassador from TRENDS,” Wang said. “I started as a PR and social media officer and worked my way up from there, and you learn so much about what goes into making events, the behind-the-scenes of a lot of biannual, annual events.”
Wang was able to find her passion for public relations through the club and complete an internship for CLD, a public relations agency in Los Angeles.
Treasurer AJ Lico said that the club also works with other clubs, such as the sustainability club, in an attempt to sustainably unite the fashion community.
“Being able to bring everyone together and kind of put them in a space where they’re able to share their common interests and likes with one another, I think that helps build those connections and relationships amongst each other,” Lico said. “It’s nice they do this, we do that, but we’re all coming together to kind of share this one goal of being sustainable at the goal, but also taking something old and making it something new.”
Students can stay informed about upcoming events with TRENDS via their Instagram account, @csuntrends, including where the next meetings will be held.
