Cynthia D. Smock, an evangelist who preaches abstinence and is known as “Sister Cindy,” made an appearance at CSUN on Tuesday amid her decades-long college campus tour.

Smock was heard repeating her signature tour catchphrase, “Ho no mo,” on the CSUN Library Lawn, drawing a crowd of students. Alongside the chanting, Smock handed out buttons with the phrase printed on them to participating students.
Smock read various passages from the Bible and coupled them with personal anecdotes. She also engaged with the crowd, quizzing the audience of students. Her main focus was on the evangelical principle of maintaining celibacy until marriage.
Some audience members took on a more serious tone, sharing stories of their faith. Others took a more satirical approach by shouting various questions at Smock and recording her, gaining laughs from the crowd.
The overall presentation held both emphatic subject matter and an eager and enthusiastic crowd, ready to engage and have a laugh. Smock waved a faux gold chain, which she proclaimed to be the ‘Ho chain,’ at which point one student could be heard shouting, “I’m the biggest ho at CSUN. Give me the chain!”
Smock is known for her bold and humorous approach to her preaching, and CSUN’s reaction to her followed the lead of most other schools from her previous visits.
Smock is heading to UCLA and Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, and will finish this leg of her tour at UC Irvine on April 28.
