Fashion + Music feat. Georgia Simone Levy

Life is a journey. Mine began in Atlanta, Georgia. This is where my brave16-year-old mother was giving me up for adoption. That was the last time I’d be seeing her, and off I went to be raised by an all-white and Jewish family in Minnesota. Just imagine, a Bone Thugs-N-Harmony CD or one of Kanye’s earlier albums; many blizzards, and a side of potato latkes and you’ve pictured a good portion of my younger years.

Long story short, I moved to California then graduated from FIDM’s two-year program. Then I relocated to Los Angeles and shortly after was accepted to CSUN. It turns out the neighborhood I moved into off Fairfax Avenue is a hot spot for the music and fashion scene. Between the street-wear culture and musicians mixed within, this neighborhood always surprises me. For example, I could be walking down the street running errands, then Tyler the Creator will skate past, does a quick trick on his skateboard, then disappear as quickly as he showed up.

You have hidden gems like Flight Club, a shoe store where people come from all over the world to get exclusive sneakers. This is the kind of store you never know what one-of-a-kind item you could find. It’s an exciting part of Los Angeles. From photo-shoots to filming’s of music videos, I started noticing that many things happen all over this block.

I began hearing musicians in their studios late at night working on their mix tapes or albums, making their beats. It’s thrilling. Rapper Dom Kennedy has his studio across from my apartment; and I’m looking forward to hear what he’ll release this year.

My taste in music and fashion varies. Two of my favorite songs of all time are, Miles Davis “Blue in Green” and Jimi Hendrix “Hear My Train a Comin’.“ One day I’ll be dressed in high-tops and a vintage t-shirt jamming to Jack White, and the next day I could be dressed in Nasty Gal and Zara while playing a throw back from ‘A Tribe Called Quest.’ I use my SoundCloud and Spotify to create playlists.

Outfit Details:  Jacket: Topshop, Top / Jeans: Zara, Necklace, Earrings & Shoes: Forever21, Rings & Sunglasses: Urban Outfitters

I like to tell a story with the playlists I create. I add music from new artists, like Jimmy Johnson a rapper from Canada, or music from favored artists such as rapper Kendrick Lamar and other artists I have been introduced to recently like Allan Kingdom a rapper from Minnesota. I think these people are some of the “monster-minds” in the music industry today.

For many, style is about being an individual. It’s important to be confident, stay true and be unique to your own aesthetic. Whether it’s customizing a pair of sneakers, or getting that one designer product. Maybe it’s copping a special vintage item, ordering something special off ASOS the popular European website, or topping off the outfit with a trend-setting hat.

If it’s finding the album that speaks to you or having an outfit that speaks for itself, what’s important is to express yourself and spread positivity. My style and taste in music and in fashion has evolved over time. I’ve found new artists and have discovered designers and places to shop that I wasn’t familiar with years ago.

Fashion will always be something I’m passionate about. I learned a lot about style through my experiences at FIDM. The campus was inspiring; it made me want to see what I could do with my style and how I could influence others. I keep my style comfortable and chic. My go-to pieces are a clean white over-sized top, the perfect black denim bottoms, and some detailed ankle-booties. Accessories such as; rings, a choker necklace, I always rock a pair of sunglasses, diamond stud earrings and an over sized leather bag in any staple color. I enjoy nail trends too. However, I keep it simple.

Each day I walk on campus at CSUN, I learn something new. CSUN is helping me develop skills so that I can one day focus them around both my passions. Music is one way I communicate to the world. When I pick a song, it say’s a lot about who I am. For years I’ve envisioned combining music and fashion, to create a movement around the two. I have to have patience because I have more to learn. However, with passion and confidence, anything is possible.
