The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tour will return to the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks this fall with a newly remodeled course which will host the Champions Tour 2016 PowerShares QQQ Championships on October 28-30.
They had the opportunity to build this event from the ground up said Rob Oosterhuis, general manager of the Sherwood golf course.
“Take the essence of all the excitement of this community, all the tradition that has been here at Sherwood. This is a brand new event, this is the legends of the game, this is the first playoff event and its going to have its own identity,” Oosterhuis said.
This year the PGA created a partnership with PowerShares to create the QQQ tournament.
According to Invesco PowerShares representative Tom Frank, this new partnership is perfect for PowerShares QQQ.
“We find it wonderful that such a great institution like the PGA Tour Champions who was founded in 1937 is still able to come up with new formats and forms to make partnerships,” Frank said.
The top 72 players on the money list will begin the PowerShares QQQ tournament at Sherwood with the top 54 advancing to the second round. The top 36 players will go on to the finals.
One of the participants will be Duffy Waldorf who has won four PGA tours and two PGA Champions tours.
“When you get towards the end of your career you are like how many more golf tournaments do I have left, so I play them all,” Waldorf said.
Waldorf is excited to come back to Southern California after being in Canada just last week.
Sherwood is no stranger to being in the public eye. For 13 years they held the Tiger Woods annual charity event before moving it to Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere, Fla.
In all the events that the PGA Tour has hosted in different communities over the years, they have raised over $2 billion dollars.
In this event they are focusing on the Thousand Oaks and Conejo Valley area.
Waldorf himself donated $10,000 to the Sherwood Cares Foundation after winning a chipping competition. He presented the check to Stephanie Hunter, who is the vice president of the foundation.
Tickets to the event are $29 and they are part of the buy now give back where the foundation will give one ticket to someone in the community for every ticket bought. Military members and their families are welcomed free of charge.
