“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.”-Dalai Lama
Happiness is a state of being, not a destination. Yet living a happy life takes conscious effort and constant committed action. Being dedicated to positive thinking can alter your quality of life and increase your success and overall daily outlook.
Here are five easy steps to practice every day to increase your happiness:
- Avoid Social Comparison
So often in life we compare ourselves to others. We spend our time trying to live up to a fictitious standard that we have created within our own minds. We compare our insides to other peoples outsides, which only creates insecurities and self loathing. Appreciate your accomplishments and individuality. Celebrate where you are in your own life and acknowledge yourself for all that you are and do. It’s a good thing that your journey looks different then others.
- Express Gratitude
Everyday declare out-loud, or to yourself, what you are thankful for in your life. Acknowledge the small things that make you happy and recognize that assets about yourself that you do cherish.
- Practice Forgiveness
Forgiveness is not as easy as it sounds. We often hold onto our anger or grudges because we feel like we need an apology from another person. Yet these resentful feelings can actually control our thoughts and leave us feeling stuck in a negative state of mind. Forgiveness is for ourselves, not anyone else. Forgive others not because they deserve it, but because you deserve to be happy.
- Be Committed to Your Goals
Achieving your goals leads to an increase in self confidence. Set daily obtainable goals and appreciate yourself once you achieve each one. Every day increase your goals and challenge yourself to reach the success that you desire.
- Live a Healthy Lifestyle
Taking care of your body is also taking care of your mind. When you feel good on the outside, you’ll feed good on the inside too. Practicing healthy eating and daily exercise decreases anxiety and increases energy and happiness.
