More than 20 Los Angeles museums will be offering free admission on Saturday, January 31st. This year will be the celebration of the 10th annual free museum day where people will have easy access to some of the greatest art galleries, photography exhibitions, and ancient artifacts.
To lend a helping hand to “museum hoppers”, the Metrolink will also be offering discount prices so paying for parking will not be necessary if traveling by bus or subway. This will make every museum as reachable and available as possible as every museum participating in this event will have their very own special exhibitions going on.
Some of the participating Free Museum Day participants includes, Zimmer Children’s Museum, Andy Warhol at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. On regular days, ticket prices for these museums can be $15 or more as well as paying for parking prices.
The most famous pop artist, Andy Warhol, will have his own exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art. It is called “Andy Warhol: Shadows”. This exhibit will display a different side of Warhol’s work and he is known for having very bright color manipulation on stenciled images. The show will have some of Warhol’s earlier work, presenting sketches, negatives and positive shadow prints, all with a darker array of colors.
The Page Museum at the La Brea Tar pits will show visitors what used to inhabit Los Angeles during the ice age. It will include mined fossils of plants and animals. Columbian mammoth skeletons and over a million ice age fossils from 650 different species will also be on display. Visitors can also check out the famous tar pits outside and/or watch paleontologists play with the remains of animals for the exhibit.
On the more playful side, parents or siblings can take their younger ones to the Zimmer Children’s Museum where visitors can learn an array of things like instruments from all over the globe in an exhibition called Rhythms of the World or virtually fly and land a plane in their Discovery Airport exhibition.
At the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Museums on Wilshire Blvd., visitors can learn about what kinds of films have made a great impact in American history and see all sorts of trivia involving actors, producers, directors and designers.
Unlike these other museums, The J. Paul Getty Museum is one of the richest art institutions in the world that lies high on a hill overlooking Los Angeles and its admission is always free. David Singleman, the Getty’s group and tourism coordinator, says that Mr. J. Paul Getty himself wanted this museum to be as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. We are not just a museum. We are also an educational institution so we offer tours, we offer a lot of talks, and we offer a lot of public programs, etc. and of course the art. We have a very diverse collection so that people available to it and all can enjoy and learn.”
With museum day approaching, visitors can pick and choose out of 20 different museums, which ones they would like to go and visit. What is better than the enjoyment and satisfaction of attending these renowned museums for free and checking out all they have to offer? It will only be educational and productive. Visitors can spend an entire day dedicated to just learning about culture and the world around them.
